There is no question that the recently assassinated Hisham Bakhtyar was a brutal torturer and war criminal for the Syrian regime (of Hafidh and Bashshar). Today, I was reading in the documentary classic book on the Hamah massacre (put out by the propaganda arm of the Muslim Brotherhood of Syria in the 1980s but contains useful information, titled Hamah: Ma'sat Al-`Asr). I was looking for the names of war criminals who were part of the apparatus of oppression at the time. I read that some of the victims of torture and interrogation remembered a "ra'id" (I dont know how the rank translates into English, a colonel?) by the name of Ayyub. Is that the same `Ali Ayyub, the new chief-of-staff? Not sure.
PS Akram sent me this: "Ra'ed is Major. Ali Ayyoub is 61 years old. In 1981, he was 30, an age appropriate for this rank. But I think it's a long shot."
