Syrian conscripts

I received a letter from a Syrian (in Syria).  He wrote to me because he is being called for military duty and he asked me what he should do given that he is opposed to the regime and to the armed opposition groups.  He told me that he just wants to live and that he does not want to die for either side.  What do you say to that?  I had a hard time writing him a response.
