Bahrain Update

From Angry Arab chief Bahrain correspondent: "You will notice that the Obama Administrations policy towards Bahrain is getting progressively worse. You already posted about the US embassy visiting an injured policemen. Well this week 7 policemen were attacked (wonder why) and the US embassy decided to visit the Prime Minister himself to express concern over the attack. Also look at the white house's latest statement on Bahrain. http://iipdigital.usembassy.gov/st/english/texttrans/2012/04/201204113684.html#axzz1rlKL8aGm The statements were never great to begin with but at least last year they were more critical. This latest statement equates protester violence (which is very rare) to that of the government. Also the latest statement was prompted by the attack on 7 policemen and not for example alkhawajas hunger strike, the continuous use of excessive force by the regimes forces, the delaying of cases, the failure to prosecute those responsible for torture, the death of 30 persons due to tear gas etc etc. Notice how the first sentence is on the attack of the policemen, the second calls for the regime to exercise "restraint", while the third and last is to call for a "humanitarian" solution to AlKhawaja whatever that means (never mind that the bassiouni report found that alkhawaja was tortured and that all the trials were basically a farce). They never call for his release and the release of all the political prisoners.

Their statements and their visit to the PM , which the US puts in the camp of the hardliners (as well as their visit to the injured policeman) is meant it seems to send the opposition a very clear message - that the US is behind the regime 100% and that they better take that lousy little deal that Khalid Bin Ahmed (minister of royal court) gave them last month because that is all they are going to get.

I have a suggestion for all your students and all students who are planning to do Ph.Ds. This is the perfect way to see in action how a country becomes anti-american directly as a result of US foreign policy choices."
