"THE United Nations collects data on attitudes among women to domestic violence. The numbers are not drawn from the same surveys, so should be compared with that in mind. Also, some countries are not covered by these datasets. Unfortunately attitudes to domestic violence in some of the missing places may be even worse than they are in Jordan, which comes top of this (non-comprehensive) list of bad places to be female today." Here is my view of this chart. Yes, in those countries listed, respondents may not feel the same shame that respondents in the West may feel regarding views on domestic violence. Stigmatization of public approval of such practices is bigger in Western countries than in some Eastern countries. But the facts are fact: the rate of domestic violence in the US, is comparable to that in Jordan, for example. So they may not voice public approval, but they are going about the business of hitting women. (thanks Mohammed)
