Anne Barnard, New York Times correspondent in the Middle East sent me this in response to a critical post from yesterday (I cite with her permission): "On the record: "Mr. Mohammed" was an editing
mistake that unfortunately we didn't catch until you mentioned it. But we do
understand the significance of "Abu."
I was the Boston Globe's
Baghdad bureau chief and Middle East bureau chief for 4 1/2 years (including
coverage of Iran and Syria) until the Globe closed down its foreign coverage for
financial reasons, at which point I moved to the Times in New York. I am
currently filling in in the Beirut bureau. I welcome correspondence from anyone with information or
an interest in the story, by clicking on my byline to send a direct email. Best,
Anne Barnard."
