I am told that Syrian regime TV did not air the interview with Bashshar by Barbara Walters in full, that it was conveniently edited. I still find the demeanor of Bashshar rather awkward in such rare public appearances: he seems smugly smiling and awkward. Yesterday, for the second time in a few weeks, he received his friend, Talal Arsalan (an insignificant Lebanese sectarian Druze chieftain whose family lost power during the civil war). I was thinking: there are no signs of reform in Syria bar on: the regime hired a most skillful propagandist as a spokesperson for the Syrian foreign ministry. So much for reform.
