Sharbil Nahhas, the Marxist economist, is probably the best minister who ever served in Lebanon. He had a social-economic agenda that addresses the interests of the workers and the poor. Yesterday, his partners in the government, Hizbullah ministers, went against him and supported a lousy version championed by the Chamber of Commerce and the billionaire prime minister. Hizbullah has never ever held a progressive agenda of social justice. This is a party that surrendered the social-economic files to Rafiq Hariri throughout his years in government. Salutation to Sharbil Nahhas, who should have known better: Hizbullah does not side with the working poor.
