Riyad Ash-Shaqfah

So this leader of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood held a press conference yesterday.  He confirmed that Islam and Islamic values will guide and rule over the new government that he wants to establish in Syria. Yet, he said that the new government will be "civil".  I have always hated this reference to "civil government" by fundamentalists and their liberal allies in the region because this is a vague concept and won't amount to a specific recipe of government.  I think secularists should insist on the need for a secular government and should not waffle on the goal by invoking the ambiguous term of "madani" government.  Ash-Shaqfah called for Turkish military intervention in Syria but said that Western military intervention is rejected by the Syrian people.  Ash-Shaqfah did not know that Turkey is a member of NATO.  What was most significant about his remarks is that he talked about the Syrian National Council as if it was his dukkan (shop). Well, he did because it is indeed his shop.
