It is not insignificant that Munsif Al-Marzuqi will become president of Tunisia, although the powers rest with the prime minister. Al-Marzuqi wants to expand the powers of the president to create a system that is close to the French or Russian systems. This is a man I respected for a long time: a brave and unwavering fighter for human rights under the Bin `Ali dictatorship. He is a secular leftist but I have been dismayed by his recent alliance with An-Nahda. I also did not like how he has diluted his staunch secularism in his campaign.
