- releasing fabricated or misleading statements attributed to the UK Foreign Secretary, the United Nations, and others
- broadcasting "confessions" of political detainees on state television prior to their trial, one of whom was killed in custody and whose body bore clear marks of torture
- recruiting a nonexistent journalist
