A person who does not want to be identified sent me this: "...her Arabic turned out to be good, and as I
was chatting with her she revealed her hate for the Shia at more than one
occasion. She was telling me, with disgust, that she doesn't like the corniche
anymore because "it is obvious that the Shia took control over it with their
"argileh", loud music, etc and that as a woman she doesn't feel comfortable
strolling there anymore"... I mean how does she know they are Shia? How does she
know they are not Sunnis from Tariq Jdideh for example? this is a very classist
statement too, where else can the poor go in Beirut? She also said that "in the
70's, you would see more women on the corniche, and that women don't go there
anymore because it is now too conservative". Simply not true. This is a diplomat
and she was speaking at a public event with a random person, me. So imagine what
she says in private meetings! She also had hate statements against the
Palestinians, she told me that she was kidnapped by students from Fateh at AUB
back in the 70s and was disappointed because at the time AUB was a stronghold
for the Palestinians and the leftists and that she was very active in the
opposition trying for example to end a strike started by the Palestinians
against tuition increase because, she said "what do those Palestinians care,
they are there on scholarships while my parents were paying and they have no
right to disrupt my semester!". These kinds of people end up as diplomats here?!"
