Victims of Arab uprisings: the numbers

Comrade Joseph sent me this (I cite with his permission):  "As’ad, we should not exaggerate the numbers of dead in Syria. It is terribly awful as it is. Remember that at least 2200 were killed by Mubarak in 18 days (of whom over 1000 remain missing and are presumed dead and buried in unknown graves by Mubarak’s security apparatus), not to mention the thousands injured including hundreds who lost their eyes by police bullets. Western estimates of the dead in Syria and Libya are around the same after six months of the revolts. Now if the horrible and repressive Ba’thist and Qadhdhafi regimes killed almost the same amount of people in six months that Mubarak killed in 18 days, what is the Western brouhaha about, especially in light of their support for Mubarak even after his removal? Certainly not about the number of the dead, as clearly the Ba’th and Qadhdhafi, murderous as they are, are much less so than Mubarak. Had Mubarak not been removed from power, can you imagine how many more thousands he would have killed in six months?"

PS Of course, I distinguish my brouhaha from Western governments' brouhaha.
