Syrian family names

My friend Amer noted this: that many of the leading figures of the Syrian opposition hail from what is called "prominent families" (I hate that term because it only mean that those families have traditionally been wealthy and have traditionally been loyal and subservient to the Ottoman government and later to the European colonizers).  It is noteworthy.
