German tanks to Saudi Arabia: rewards for reforms

Karim sent me this (I cite with his permission):  "I was Just listening to German news on the Radio: The parliamentary (government's not sure) security council/committee just approved the sale of the most modern version of the German Leopard Tank to the Saudi Regime. 200 of them, the whole deal including maintenance and training etc is estimate to be worth more than a billion Euro. When before the Saudi's wanted to buy weapons, these sales were not approved because such sales would threaten Israeli security. Apparently, The Israeli lobby here in Germany doesn't think so any more? The Social Democrats opposition to the deal though is still rooted in concerns over Israeli Security.  There was only brief mention of Saudi involvement in Bahrain in the report but no mention that the @#$@#@ nature of the regime entered the
discussions in government in any meaningful way and it doesn't really seem to disturb anybody. Merkel and her cohorts were credited for making the deal possible."
