Arab regimes and their social bases of support
I must confess this. I have always argued that the Iranian regime has a social bases of support, and thus its ouster may prove to be difficult. But for Arab regimes, I may have underestimated their social bases of support. I saw yesterday another show of support for Qadhdhafi in Tripoli; and the appearance of `Abdullah Salih for the first time since the bombing led to expression of jubilation by many Yemenis; and the Asad regime still manages to produce demonstrations by its supporters. After all: those regimes would not have been able to last as along as they have purely on coercion. They have become skilled in manufacturing consent by some sectors.
