The president of AUB issued a statement in defense of Wolfensohn. It is a provocative and outrageous statement, and if I had the time I would have dissected it word for word. Just take the opening line of defense: "On taking office as president of the World Bank, Wolfensohn initiated semi-annual meetings with the finance ministers of Arab countries, creating a dialogue that built greater understanding of the region’s problems. He traveled dozens of times to the region and was received at both official and community activist levels; many of these contacts remain his close personal friends, including Palestinian and Lebanese leaders." So the President of AUB wants us to praise Wolfensohn because as president of the destructive World Bank he met regularly with Arab potentates and their representatives, and because he becamse friends with Rafiq Hariri (that is what is meant by "Lebanese leaders")? The worst part is when the president of AUB talks about WOlfensohn receiving some dubious honor from the Palestinian Authority. Hell, there are Israeli butchers who have received awards and honors from the Palestinian Authority. And how care the president of AUB talks about "narrow interests" behind the professors of AUB who signed the petition. What larger interest do you have in mind, o Professor of AUB? Maybe the larger imperialist interests are grand enough for you?
