Maids in the Middle East

"DUBAI — Six men, who were allegedly involved in selling a runaway maid for sexual exploitation, were charged with human trafficking on Wednesday.  The trial of the six Indians, including a driver, two jobless men, a cook, a visitor and a businessman, began in the Court of First Instance.  They are accused of taking advantage of the Filipina maid’s economic condition and illegal status as a runaway to lure her into prostitution. The maid, 31, said she did not have her passport with her and did have any other choice but to obey them to make a living.  She told the prosecutor that she had to run away from her sponsor’s house after she went out to the supermarket without his permission. She was afraid to confront him."  (thanks Anders)
