In reality, despite what we read, no one really knows what is happening in Syria. And no one really knows who is in charge, as I suspect that at this time of crisis, the Syrian military/intelligence `Alawite elite has taken over. There is a media clampdown and that gives fuel to anti-Syrian Saudi (and now Qatari) propaganda claims. I do receive some scanty reports from Syria (mostly through the internet) and I can say that the siege of rebellion cities and towns are real: they are imposing sieges, Israeli-style, preventing even bread from arriving. Most alarming, I have received a variety of reports indicating that people (of different stripes and sects) are arming themselves and sectarian tensions are most acute. If the Syrian situation descends into civil wars (not one for sure), you may expect Lebanon to follow suit. Somebody sent me collections of headlines from Al-Manar TV: they were incredible. You would think that they were talking about Sweden.
