I have been asked to recommend more books and articles on Egypt: aside from Robert Springborg's Mubarak's Egypt, which I have mentioned before, you need Diane Singerman's Avenues of Participation and Saba Mahmood's Politics of Piety. I should suggest books on the political identity of Egypt, but most are written by Zionists for some reason from a narrow perspective (Nadav Safran's is one example). Mohammad Heykal's Autumn of Fury is essential as David Hirst's book on Sadat. Jamal Hamdan' Shakhsiyyah Misr, is an unusual (original) book. Class Conflict in Egypt by Mahmood Hussein. The `Adil Imam movie, As-Safarah fi-al-`Imarah is an example of Mubarak propaganda which promotes apathy and apoliticalness among the people. I like (like X below) older books, so I want to recommend Awar Abdel-Malek's book, Egypt: Military Society. A classic (an article by the same author was an early critique of Orientalism: "Orientalism in C risis," Diogenes 44 (1963):). I also suggest that you follow public opinion surveys of Egyptian views on foreign policy (by Zogby) and you will find the huge discrepancy between regime's policies and public orientations). Derek Hopwood's book on modern Egypt is good but not critical. There is more, so much more alas. Oh, there is an article by Springborg on the identity of Egypt in Harvard International Review, I think.
