East German transition to "democracy"

Guthman sent me this:  "The Hitler and Himmler comparison doesn't quite cut it. But there is one from the 1989 end of the GDR that does. Very interesting that Angela Merkel is now brandishing her "peaceful change" credentials. The East-German equivalent to what is now happening in Egypt would have been the following: (1) Honegger refuses to go and (2) following "advice" from Moscow, the head of the East German secret police, the still notorious Erich Mielke  gets promoted by the regime to negotiate a transition... towards his own regime. Yes I am sure Frau Merkel and the Leipzig demonstrators would have really appreciated that! I am sure the New York Times and Der Spiegel would have applauded that, as "necessary prudence"!"
