Museum of Intolerance
A reader sent me this (he does not want to be identified): "As'ad, please, if you post this, maintain my anonymity, thanks. I am a regular reader of your post, and while I may disagree with certain things you post (you tend to overgeneralize issues), I wanted to comment on the below issue. I attended a year-long program in Israel from the end of the summer in 2005-the beginning of summer 2006. I am a Jewish American and I recall that someone spoke to our group more or less in front of the cemetery and mentioned that a Museum of 'Tolerance' was perhaps going to be built on top of this gravesite. He mentioned that "according to Islam, if a gravesite has not been used in x amount of years, it would be acceptable to change the status." He also mentioned that perhaps the graves would be "moved" to another place, which he said was also acceptable to Muslims (in theory). By the way, this cemetery is not off the beaten path in Jerusalem, it's very close to the center of town (Ben Yehuda Mall) and other famous locales. The Museum of 'Tolerance' as far as I know, could be built on any area in W. Jerusalem, but I feel that this is a blatant way of disrespecting the Palestinian community. I remember listening to the BBC a few months ago and they reported on the Jewish community in Kaifeng that fled their to escape Nazis. Jews are far away as LA want to keep the structures and "memory" of the community alive. Can you imagine if the Chinese destroyed the synagogue their, for example? The double standard is unconscionable."
