Self-grading

I experimented with self-grading over the years: but only briefly. If you ask students to grade one another, they tend to be harsh. But if you ask them to grade themselves, they are overly generous--and unfairly so. I once asked a class to self-grade: they all gave themselves an A, except a student from Japan who gave himself a C-. I of course changed his grade to an A, but ended the experiment with self-grading.
