Tarub and Muhammad Jamal
You miss a lot from the Western news coverage of the Middle East, nay they miss a lot. They are obsessed with religion and war that much is left uncovered. I would say that the reunion a week ago on Nishan's show, Maestro, was the biggest event during Ramadan. The two singers (Muhammad Jamal is a Lebanese from Tripoli whose family originally came from Nablus), and Tarub is originally circassian from Jordan who resided between Damascus and Beirut) were married from 1957 until 1964 and they constituted in their heydays a very successful singing and acting duet. They have not been reunited since. Muhammad Jamal is retired in California (does anybody know where he is?), while Tarub is retired in Cairo. Tarub was a sex symbol in the last 1960s and early 1979s, but later donned the veil and discovered God and some prophets in her retirement years and refuses to sign a line now. I saw her once when she visited our house: my father knew her (although there are family disagreements over how well my father knew her) but I remember that my mother had her banned after the one visit when I was 10 or 11. I always liked Muhammad Jamal: I like how he sings and how he carries himself. He also expressed his political views: strongly in support of resistance against Israel. Damn: I like the man even more now. I like many of his songs especially "Sayyartu Akbar" which has class conflict connotations.
