My theory

I like Oxford although the stores are not as clean as in the US. So a gas station deli in the US is cleaner than a grocery store in Oxford--no exaggeration. And when you see Oxford you realize that college towns in the US, especially the old ones like New Haven or Cambridge, were an imitation of Oxford.
