Muslim shoes

"The organisers said they wanted to leave shoes at the gates as a Muslim symbol of disgust at the attacks." Wait. I thought it was an Arab cultural thing, not a religious thing. Am I wrong? Where are the ignorant cultural experts of CNN when you need them. (thanks Wassim)
