How not to learn about foreign affairs
It is official: Richard Engel is the most ill-informed person there is on Middle East affairs in all of US media--and the competition for that title is tough. He is the chief foreign affairs correspondent for NBC News. I could not imagine how ignorant he was of the area (Middle East) that he was asked to analyze. He was on MSNBC analyzing the shoe. He said that it is not true that there is Arab support for the shoe thrower. He said that there is curisoity but not support. Even if you don't read Arabic, how can you miss even by reading English language sources the extent to which this story is huge all over Arab media. Even the Saudi media which initially had to resist the tide of coverage, had to succumb. Even Al-Arabiyya started playing the shot in slow motion. The host asked him about the demonstrations in Sadr City: he basically dismissed Sadr City, and said it is marginal and that it is not Baghdad and that the people there are "uneducated." I finished wathching having learnt of ignorance of foreign affairs what I knew not before.
