Dispatch from Lebanon. Nader sent me this from Lebanon: "I'm headed back to Ohio tomorrow, but before I leave, I thought I'd share a few more quick comments with you. 1. In any casual conversation with LF activists and supporters, you'd be amazed at the muslim-hating piffle (I learned that word from Christopher Hitchens) they spew, that would make even Daniel Pipes blush. When pressed and reminded of their alliances, they backtrack and say it's only the Shia who are "backward." Apparently their Salafi friends love life too. 2. LBC broadcast the annual memorial mass for Bachir Gemayel live today. I'm all for families remembering their dead, but the use of churches and mass for narrow electoral purposes is over the top, and it's happening with the full collaboration of the (mainly pro-LF) Maronite clergy. (The patriarch is so disgustingly biased you'd think he too is on Hariri's payroll, and rumor has it that he is.) 3. The spectacle of Samir Geagea's feigned piety is beyond revolting. To think that this unabashed criminal is allowed into church, and that some Christians still follow him.... To quote Hitch again, it's a pity there isn't a hell for him to go to. 4. Bachir's son delivered a speech at the end (most likely inaugurating his electoral campaign for Achrafieh, where he'll he going up against the other March 14 clowns). His only apparent qualification is that he has the vaunted Gemayel Y-chromosome. Not only did he deliver one of the biggest loads of BS to ever escape Saad Hariri, but he also has all the oratory skills and grasp of basic Arabic grammar of a pet hamster. He clearly did not write that speech, and had trouble reading it. His eloquence nearly rivals that of Demosthenes, or even the great Michel Mouawad! Cheers, Nader"
