Meet Lebanon's warlords. One of the warlords of the Lebanese civil war is `Ali `Id (a client of the Syrian regime). He is leading a (predominantly `Alawite) pro-opposition militia of Arab Democratic Party in Ba`l Muhsin. He was a student of the late Hanna Batatu at the American University of Beirut in the 1960s. Batatu told me that `Id once went to a night club that was frequented by a Saudi prince. He then picked a fight with him, and then spent months pretending that he could not walk, and would come to school in a wheelchair (although he would be occasionally seen running and walking). He sued the prince for a lot of money, and then settled out of court.
