Four Arabic Words in Three Years. Jeffrey Feltman, the US ambassador in Lebanon, spoke his fourth word of Arabic during his 3 years in Lebanon. In an interview on LBC-TV--where else--he was seen taking questions in Arabic from one of the most right-wing and sectarian Christian reporters--Denise Rahmah Fakhri. He answered in English (although we did not see how the tape was edited but the purpose was to show him understanding Arabic). He then spoke three words of Arabic--too undecipherable to quote for you although I was able to understand Jalsah (session) although he pronounced it as Jalllsssaaakkkkddh. This completes the record of Mr. Feltman who is about to leave Lebanon for Turkey. On previous occasions he was heard saying "Shukran". What else do you want from this ambassador. He also explained the technical reasons for the sudden shift in US position on Lebanon: only weeks ago the US government opposed any amendment of the constitution and now it supports the amendment. A source in Washington, DC tells me that Feltman received his Middle East training from Martin Indyk when he worked under him in the US embassy in Israel. At his rate of learning, it is expected that Feltman (or Jeff as Marwan Hamadah calls him) will learn four words of Turkish during his service in Istanbul.
