This is a disgusting story: and nobody shines from it. It was quite amazing that the teacher resigned and that she was expected to denounce a word--Intifadah. And the worst character for me as an educator is Randi Weingarten, the president of the United Federation of Teachers, who requested a denunciation of the word intifadah. What is this: denouncing a word? Now without arguing the case or the meanings of the word Intifadah, what is value of denouncing a word? Revolution, revolt, uprising, and rebellion all have meanings that entailed historically forms of violence, are teachers also expected to denounce the word revolution when speaking about the Russian Revolution or the American revolution? Or do those words become particularly sinister when used in Arab or Muslim settings? But the story is illustrative: no matter how much you give in, you will ask to prostrate to a higher degree.
