The other day, I saw the new British ambassador in Lebanon make a statement in Arabic. Her predecessor also spoke Arabic. The Russian and Chinese ambassadors also speak Arabic. The last US ambassador who spoke Arabic was Richard Parker in the late 1970s. But the current US ambassador in Lebanon once greeted reporters in Arabic: it came out like this: Maaaarrrrrhhuuuuubbbiiiaaaa. I kid you not.
