From the History of `Arafat's Fath. Once in the late 1970s, the Fath leadership had an urgent meeting in Lebanon. A Fath official promoted by `Arafat (Abu Az-Za`im*, aka `Atallah `Atallah--one of the most corrupt PLO leaders ever appointed by `Arafat, who was skilled for appointing corrupt and incompetent officials. Abu Az-Za`im (who was always accused of loyalty to Jordanian mukhabrat) was so corrupt that he used to fly Egyptian belly dancers for his lavish x-mass parties in his opulent Verdun Street apartment in Beirut), had raped a woman from Bhadmdun. The people were quite unhappy, and wanted retribution. The relationship between the PLO and the town was quite strained: Abu Jihad was most upset because he deliberately stayed away from the corruption of Beirut, and set up his headquarters in Suq Al-Gharb. While the discussion got heated, Abu Jihad fumed: "here we are. The leadership of the backbone organization of the PLO discussing this [ugly matter]. Maybe we should erect a statue for the penis of Abu Az-Za`im now."** And he stormed out.
*When the Syrian regime supported the Fath-Intifada in 1983, the Jordanian government was jealous. They urged Abu Az-Za`im in 1983 to mount his own schism from Fath: he did. He formed an organization with 3 or 4 members. He later went back to `Arafat and apologized. `Arafat forgave him but on the condition that he increases his corruption and incompetence.
**I am not quoting from a transcript, but from an account I was told by difference sources (at the time and later).
