The opposition in Lebanon is promoting Fu'ad Makhzumi and his empty National Dialogue Party. Makhzumi made his fortunes allegedly from arms deals before settling in Lebanon and bribing his way into the political system. Like Hariri, he also wanted his fortune to qualify him for the prime minister position. People who work in Makhzumi companies and schools are forced to join his party (just like Hariri forced his employees to join the Future movement). But Makhzumi has no support, no matter how much the opposition and Makhzumi money push him. A teacher at one Makhzumi school wrote to me asking that I mention the pressures to which teachers are subjected to join that party. Today, the party celebrated its 1st year anniversary: the affair had as much spontaneity as North Korea's national festivals.
