"Wednesday, on the hung-over morning after midterm voters told President Bush what they thought of the Iraq war, a White House news release arrived in our inbox, with the cryptic subject line "PERSONNEL ANNOUNCEMENT."Hidden therein was a list of this year's National Medal of Arts and National Humanities Medal winners, to be honored the next day by the president and first lady Laura Bush in the Oval Office. No invite, no number to call for information, just a list. Why so little fanfare? Could it have been because the humanities honorees included Middle East scholars-turned-Bush advisers Fouad Ajami and Bernard Lewis, whose views helped get us into Iraq in the first place? On the day of the prestigious ceremony, the White House Web site featured -- nothing." (thanks to Laleh)
