When Hummus Hit the Fan (series): Hariri Inc camp in Beirut wants you to believe that those who were behind the violent riots in Beirut were Syrians, Palestinians, and Bedouins--I kid you not. Today, Faris Su`ayd (a Hariri tool for years), speaking on behalf of the ruling Hariri coalition, said that Jordanian fundamentalists were also involved. In reality, those responsible were Sunni fanatical groups from North Lebanon, who were recruited by Hariri Inc during the parliamentary campaign last year. And many Ben Ladenite were released from jail to win votes for Hariri Inc among voters in North Lebanon. As-Safir reported that many of the demonstrators chanted pro-Bin Laden, pro-Zarqawi slogans but away from the TV cameras. All those who I saw on LBC-TV (the vehicle of the Lebanese Forces militia) spoke with Lebanese accents (either from Beirut or from North Lebanon). Here, Husam `Itani offers a good class analysis of the Sunni political scene in Lebanon, and the underlying causes for radicalism. Sulayman Franjiyyah today offered his own take: he said that Hariri Inc organized the demonstration in order to underline their Sunni political credentials, but that things went out of hand.
