There is a trend in the Middle East. The resurgence of the Muslim Brotherhood. From Egypt, to Lebanon (Al-Jama`ah Al-Islamiyyah among Sunni Muslims), to Syria, to Iraq, to Jordan, etc, you see the trend. The early predictions of Olivier Roy (in l'echec de l'islam politique) or the later prediction by Gilles Kepel (in Jihad) may have been premature. I think that the fanatical kooky trend of Al-Qa`idah has certainly failed to make a dent in Muslim public opinion or in mass support. In fact, it can be argued that the failure of Al-Qa`idah boosted the standing of the Musilm Brotherhood. They stand as a trend that is neither tainted by US ties (like Arab governments) nor by the terrorist violence and mayhem of Al-Qa`idah. I personally don't believe that they have any solution to the acute social, economic, and political problems of the region, their catchy slogan notwithstanding. They too will eventually fail, and collapse, but probably after they reach power in one or more Arab country.
