Nightmare of Life by Syrian poet Muhammad Al-Maghut (my translation):
"Everything raises my ire
and ruins my life for me
occupation...and independence
chaos...and order
light...and darkness
noise...and quiet
fame...and neglect
sweet smiles...loud laughter
national costumes...fashionable
submission..ambition
spring..fall
the joy of holidays..ghosts of death
travel offices...information
playfulness of children..coughs of elderly
rare paintings...penetrating beauty
nudity..decency..vulgarity
all what penetrates me like a spear...
whenever a security person rings my bell
and tells me: I shall return.
or a phone call from a stranger
Thus I plead with you and kiss your hands
so that you send a delegate for that mission,
traffic cop...food ration...rhythem.
I know that his behavior is shameful,
stigmatic, and dishonorable
But shame is more beautiful than fear!!"
