Lebanonese liberalism: the status of foreign maids in Lebanon reveals the real Lebanon, for all to see. This is where the Lebanonese show themselves as they really are: people who chant about freedom, while keeping their foreign domestic workers in semi-slave status; people who speak about "liberal" ideals, while being blatant in their racism and classism in their mistreatment of foreign domestic workers; people who think that they are better and superior to their Arab neighbors, while they have a history of savagery and abuse in (mis)treating one another, and in dealing with those who are not white--Lebanonese imagine that they are white Europeans. In this article in the Hariri rag, Al-Mustaqbal, one Lebanonese attributes the rampant sexual abuse of maids to "sexual frustrations" of the poor oppressed maids.
