From Al-Imta` Wa-l-Mu'anasah by Abu Hayyan At-Tawhidi (d. 400 AH): "It was also told that a man from the Persians performed pilgrimage and attached himself to the curtains on the Ka`bah (the Black Stone), and went about saying pleadingly: "O, you who created the ferocious lions, and the normal reptiles, and let them loose among the people, and who afflicted people with disabilities, blindness, poverty, and need." People jumped at him, cursed him and chastised him, and said to him: "You should pray to God, using His glorious names." He showed them repentance and amicableness, so they let him go, after wanting to hurt him. He returned and attached himself to the curtains of the Ka`bah, and started yelling: "O, you who did not create the ferocious lions, nor the reptiles, and did not let them loose among the people, and who did not afflict people with pain and diseases." So they also jumped at him, and told him: "Don't say that. God is the creator of all things." He said: "I don't know what to do? If I said that God is the creator of these things, you jump at me. And if I said that God did not create them, you also jump at me." They said: "This you should learn in your heart, and not plead to God with it."
