Spread the Hummus: Hassan Fattah of the New York Times has arrived in Beirut, having covered the country from Dubai and Jordan thus far. Jubilant crowds take to the streets of Lebanon to welcome him. Hummus was splattered on the walls of the city and falafils were tossed from balconies in celebration. Here he says: "The Lebanese Constitution has little mechanism for impeachment, short of treason." Of course, Fattah is, as we always expect him to be, quite wrong. The Constitution has a specific reference to that in Article 60 when it refers to crimes of "violating the constitution and high treason." And even when it comes to "ordinary crimes" his responsibility falls under "public laws." The Lebanese parliament can accuse him of such crimes in a vote by 2/3rd of its members, and his trial takes place before the High [Constitutional] court (which is now headed by his brother)--how sweet. (Is this the first time that Fattah did not interview his friend Michael Young although he managed to interview (as usual) only supporters of mini-Hariri (Sa`d).
