Now what happened to Majid Hamid, and why? And Why did the US Military lie about it? The most pro-US occupation Arab media source, outside of Al-Hurra (the US-funded propaganda channels watched by 4 people in the Middle East--3 of them are US diplomats) has been very timidly reporting about the capture, or kidnapping, of its correspondent in Baghdad Majid Hamid from the Anbar province earlier this week. First, the US military denied knowledge of his whereabouts when Al-Arabiyya and others suspected that he was arrested by US troops. Only a few days later, US military admitted that it indeed is holding Hamid for "links" to terrorists. Al-Arabiyya hosted a spokesperson from US Central Command yesterday. And it was a show. He was asked why Hamid was being held, and he went on about how the US supports free media in the Middle East, but then added that US supports "balanced media." I loved that. He sounded like an official of the Ministry of Information in Jordan (or Syria, or Libya, or...). He was then asked again, about why Hamid was being held. He then went on to describe the rate of terrorism last week in Iraq. Then Zeina Yaziji (the able Syrian broadcaster who was lured by Syrian TV by a salary 20 times her Syrian TV salary) jumped in, very timidly as Al-Arabiyya reporters are under strict instructions to not offend US officials--I can tell--to press him about any evidence he has against Hamid. At that point, the spokesperson said that he would not talk about the evidence because that would not be fair to Hamid, I kid you not. So Hamid will be held without charges pressed, and no evidence will be presented because it is more fair to Hamid that way. OK.
