Commenting on Syrian tightening of the border with Lebanon, Condoleeza Rice says that "neighbors don't close their borders." But is that not what US wants Syria to do with its border with Iraq? And is the US, which has been strangling Cuba for decades, in a position to preach here? Of course, Syrian measures on the border, typical of Syrian official behavior, is typically stupid. Those measures are only punishing the poor truck drivers who carry the produce, and they serve to fuel anti-Syrian sentiments in Lebanon, already inflamed by racist Lebanese patriots. And then the Syrian government FINALLY brings up the issue of Lebanese attacks on Syrians in Lebanon, which resulted in the death of 37 and the injury of 280. Thousands of Syrian workers are still missing in Lebanon. But the Syrian government has not said a word about their plight until this week. The Syrian media has not even brought up the issue until this week. But then again: since when do oppressive Arab governments care about their citizens, especially when they happen to be poor?
