A letter to the Editor: "You report a US military spokesman noticing a "downward trend in attacks" in Iraq and offering the view that "the situation does get better every day" (March the least deadly month for US, April 1). Data provided from media reports of civilian casualties tell a very different story (see www.iraqbodycount.net). Civilian deaths remain at several hundred a month and the number of violent incidents involving civilian deaths shows no signs of abating. Official reluctance by the US and UK to monitor and report civilian deaths remains inexcusable.
