"Their" definition of Feminism. Concrete Evidence that Women in Afghanistan are now FREE. Free at last. First, it is not amusing for me to watch notoriously sexist individuals (whether Clinton or Christopher Hitchens or Bush ) pontificate to me about gender issues. I read this piece by Hitchens in Vanity Fair on the plane yesterday. A lousy piece on Afghanistan which has the cultural insensitivity that is worse than what you read in 18th Century Western travel books in the holy land. Here is Hitchens about women's liberation in Afghanistan: "It is heartening to see the female students at Kabul University flaunting knockoffs of international fashion....It's cheering to see groups clustered around flickering TV sets, riveted to videos of swimsuit contests..." (Vanity Fair, Nov. 2004, p. 232). This is THEIR "LIBERATION" of women. Then, hoping to reach the racist standards of classical Orientalists of past centuries, Hitchens said this: " "Street" opinion, as elsewhere in the region, is almost invariably deluded and distorted." (p. 234). Seems that Hitchens has been educating himself with recent editions of the Arab Mind.
