I get upset when I see this Iraqi puppet president dressed in the traditional Arab garb. Not that I do not like it. I own one like it, although I never wear it (and the brown cover is really good to protect you from cold weather although it looks thin. My father put it on in the winter, but only at home). But Iraq has been one of the most modern Arab countries: it led the Arab world in education, culture, industries, atheism, communism, and womens rights, and this before the Ba`th imposed its brutal rule on Iraq. The Ba`th (until Saddams various defeats) reflected the modernity of Iraq in some of it public policies. Saddam reversed all that of course after 1990. And now: US liberation is taking Iraq back in time, in terms of revival of religious fundamentalism, the assertion of clerical political influence, the increasing signs of gender segregation and oppression, the support for the sexist and traditional male elders of tribes, and the subordination of universal identities to the narrowest and most particularistic of identities in the country. And this Yawir dude never dressed like that before in his life-certainly not when he went to school at George Washington University, until his silly installation by US troops. These are silly gimmicks. Iraqi politicians did not dress like that, not even during the British rule before the 1958 Revolution. But he is posing as a traditional tribal leader. And this puppet president is excited: he now is a puppet for US troops, having excelled in his previous puppet role when he served the House of Saud. Furthermore, he just married his 3rd wife. US seems to have a preference for polygamous autocrats in the Middle East. Think about it. President of Ukraine is now considering taking 2 wives, hoping to get US support.
