Get Out of Her, You Damned One: I read this in an Arabic newspaper: Saddam complained that he was getting apples and oranges as fruits. He asked for apricots and bananas instead. Saddam, as you may remember, is the only well-treated prisoner among the thousands of Iraqi prisoners in the custody of Macedonian (and US) forces in Iraq. I do not know what got into me yesterday: I actually stayed into the early hours reading Saddam's last novel. It has not been published yet, and he was working on it to the last days before the US (and Macedonian) invasion. The manuscript was found by one Arab reporter, and it is now published on an Arabic newspaper's website (Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat). I could not believe it. Having read his first novel (Zabibah And the King--I give it a grade of F- or G-), I knew what to expect. He is a very boring and tedious person, and it is reflected in his writings, and speeches. I had to really strain my eyes and patience to finish it. This one: is so much worse, and his religious fervor has multiplied and intensified. It is titled: Get Out of Her, You Damned One (Ukhruj Minha Ya Mal`un). It is a very slow, clunky, thoughtless, and uninspiring read, but may be recommended as a sure cure for insomnia. I have the habit of never beginning a book, without completing it. But I could not finish this one. It was that bad. And the religious language was so excessive: some clerics invoke God's name less than him. His vocabulary is rich, but his style is quite unimpressive. May we be spared more literary production from Saddam's cell.
