If the person is `Alawi, you have to say he/she belongs to Bashshar Al-Asad's sect--ALWAYS

Residents of Jabal Moh­sen, a neighborhood perched on a hill, are mostly of Assad’s Alawite sect."  OK, you want to remind readers that Bashshar is `Alawite is fine, but why not refer to Sunnis thus: "are mostly of Usamah Bin Laden's sect"?
