Dividing the Middle East

Divide the Middle East into little pieces (and the article does not mention that op-ed piece by none other than Joe Biden in the Times), and you will guarantee the rise of nationalist parties and movements that promise re-integration of those states.  That was the story of Arab nationalist parties.
