FLASH: Please stop the presses. Anne Barnard has learned a word of Arabic, or her Arabic translators have told her a word of Arabic. This may signal a shift in New York Times' coverage of the region.

"Mr. Assad’s surname, which means lion in Arabic".  Now say the word for potato in Arabic, Anne.  And, yes, you may call a staffer.
