More on the American students in Syria. I received this email: "Since one of your American readers was complaining about her "mis"treatment at the Syrian border, I'd like to share my stories with the treatment of Arabs at American borders, and I'll be brief (don;t use my name if you want to publish this please). A friend of mine, who is a Canadian citizen but of Arab descent was part of a Middle Eastern dance troupe traveling to the US to perform. He was detained at the Buffalo border crossing for several hours and after being interrogated by the American border patrol officers, they asked him to dance for them to "make sure that he really was part of a dance group." Also, my brother, who is also a Canadian citizen of Arab descent, gets interrogated by the Americans for anywhere from 2-5 hours every time he has to travel from Canada to the US for business. Considering he's a high ranking official of his company and his company is an American company, that means that he has to go to the US about once every 2 weeks or so. PS: never once has any American befriended him while he had to wait to get cleared!"
